It has just been announced that Michael Foot, the former leader of the British Labour Party, and a noted speaker and intellectual, has died at the age of 96. He was well regarded on the Labour left as a man of strong left-wing principles and as a socialist intellectual. He stood as Labour leader in the general election against Margaret Thatcher, in an political atmosphere that had moved to the right. It led to his resignation as leader.
He will be remembered and missed.
